About Casa Felix

Casa Felix lies on the edge of the village of Chio, on the Southwest side of Tenerife. Conveniently located close to hiking, golf and beaches, our vacation rental homes offer the perfect mix of calm, beauty, and functionality. Taking inspiration from the impressive local environment, Casa Felix is constructed with many typical Canarian materials. The vacation rental homes include local wood, terracotta and tuff (‘cantoblanco’) from the nearby quarries. This is complemented by state-of-the-art appliances and fixtures which make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Both vacation rental homes and the large garden offer stunning views of the often snow-capped peaks of the Teide and the southwest coast of Tenerife. The evening sunset behind the neighboring island “La Gomera” is unsurpassed.

Our home is on the ground floor of Casa Felix, so someone is always available to answer questions. You can communicate with us in English, German, and French, and we are working on Spanish!

About Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest and most populated island of the seven Canary Islands. It is over 2000 square kilometres and has a population of just under one million.

Tenerife has a spectacular landscape and is best known for being home to the third-largest (inactive!) volcano in the world: the Teide. It lies in the center of the island and is a national park and World Heritage Site. There is also a large UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on the island: Macizo de Anaga.

Groceries

There are local markets in nearby villages. Larger grocery stores can be found in Guia De Isora (‘Alteza’, 3 km) and Adeje (‘Mercadona’, ‘Tutrebol’, ‘Lidl’, 20 km) and Los Gigantes (‘Mercadona’, and ‘Lidl’, 14 km)

Restaurants

There are a very few local restaurants as we are in a small village away from the tourist ares and the ones we do have close early like the Casa Sira and Restaurante El Guachinyero, both offer Canarian cuisine (2.5 km). For all restaurants in the beach cities it is very much advisable to book ahead! In Playa San Juan we recommend the French restaurant La Boca Rie  (19km, 20 min).  Le Petit Bistro in La Caleta (25km, 25 min) serves a nice mix of local and Italian cuisine. In Alcala (20 km, 20 min) we can recommend the Italian restaurant Sauco (incredible location!), the fish restaurant Muelle Viejo, and a newcomer Tres Raices.  Further afield in the capital Santa Cruz there is fine dining at its best at San Sebastian 57  (75 km, 1.1 hours), and Guaydil in La Laguna (95 km, 1.2 hours).

Hiking

Casa Felix is perfectly located for hiking. You can start basically right outside our door! To get to the entrance of Teide National Park is 20 km (24 min) and the Paradores Cañadas del Teide, in the centre, is 36 km (40 mins).

Beaches

There are some great beaches including our favorite local beach just northwest of Alcala (20 km, 20 min), Playa de la Arena (14 km, 20 min), Las Vistas (19km, 24 min) and El Medano (46 Km 36 min).

The Climate

Tenerife is known as the “Island of Eternal Spring” (Isla de la Eterna Primavera).

It lies at the same latitude as the Sahara Desert and enjoys a warm tropical climate with an average of 18–24 °C (64–75 °F) in the winter and 24–28 °C (75–82 °F) in the summer. Expect lots and lots of sun!

The moderate climate of Tenerife is controlled to a great extent by trade winds from the north. The diverse topography of the landscape plays a role in climatic differences on the island. Imagine standing in the sunshine of Teide National Park and looking down on the clouds gathered over the coast, hiding the ocean below. Spectacular!

Wine

All Canarian wines are cultivated on volcanic soil. The vines lie mostly undisturbed on the flat ground or on terraces. The mild climate of the Canary Islands and the constant northeastern winds gives the wines a distinctive and delicious taste.

In the 16th and 17th centuries,  many families were involved in wine production. Writers such as William Shakespeare and Walter Scott make reference to Tenerifian wine in some of their works.

Most restaurants and stores sell local wines and you may want to visit a local bodega. Quite close to Casa Felix, in the district of Abona, is the Bodega Reveron.

Cuisine

Canarian food has strong Spanish influences, but indigenous, South American and African cuisine have also made their mark. In Tenerife, the local cuisine is best found in guachinches, small restaurants, typically found in old garages or converted barns.

Tenerife enjoys an abundance of fish of various kinds, and it is lovely watching the fishing boats along the coast. Meat, including pork, chicken, rabbit and goat, is often used in stews.

In addition to meat and fish, the food mainly consists of potatoes and legumes. Salads are made from green lettuce, peppers, tomatoes (like green meat tomatoes) and avocados, seasoned with vinegar and oil, salt and pepper. Bread and mojo sauces are available for almost every meal.

Octopus

Two varieties of local goat’s cheese (Queso de Cabra) have the designation of Denominación de Origen: the Queso Palmero of La Palma and the Queso Majorero of Fuerteventura.

In addition to local food, there are a wide variety of international cuisines available. Ask us for recommendations of our favorite restaurants!

Geography

Tenerife is a rugged and volcanic island, sculpted by successive eruptions. The island was formed three million years ago when volcanic activity from Teide joined three separate islands . The Teide is visible from most parts of the island, including Casa Felix.

Tenerife’s geography makes for spectacular views and an incredible variety of hiking terrains for the more active.

Geography

The island of Tenerife has a remarkable ecological diversity in spite of its small surface area. There are numerous micro-climates which allow for a rich and diverse flora. There are over 1400 species of plants, with over a hundred endemic to Tenerife.

Nearly half of the island is a protected natural area.
